Our Favorite Isekai Anime

Truck-kun has sent a lot of protagonists to a lot of fantasy worlds, and we've followed just about all of them. These six are the trips we keep coming back to — the comfiest, the funniest, the most beautiful, the most brutal, the most gloriously unhinged. No objective rankings here, no scoring rubric: just the isekai we'd defend with our lives (and then get reincarnated and defend again).

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

The comfort food of isekai. Rimuru starts as the weakest monster in the bestiary and ends up running the most wholesome nation in anime — naming goblins, befriending demon lords, and solving most problems with diplomacy (and the occasional apocalyptic magic when diplomacy fails). Slime is at its best when nothing urgent is happening: the found-family politics, the town-building, the monsters clocking in for work. It's a power fantasy where the fantasy is good management, and somehow that rules.

The blueprint for cozy nation-building isekai.

KONOSUBA

Every other show on this list plays the genre at least half-straight. KONOSUBA showed up to burn it all down. Kazuma is a schemer with zero heroic qualities, Aqua is a useless goddess with maximum self-esteem, Megumin refuses to learn any spell except the one that knocks her unconscious, and Darkness... is Darkness. It's the funniest anime of its decade, full stop — and the secret is that underneath the chaos, this broke, bickering party genuinely works. Explosions optional. (They are not optional.)

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

The one that takes the premise deadly seriously. A washed-up shut-in gets a true second chance and decides — for once — to actually try. Mushoku Tensei is a decades-spanning fantasy epic with film-grade production, a world that feels genuinely lived-in, and a deeply flawed protagonist whose growth is earned inch by uncomfortable inch. When people argue isekai can be *great* television and not just comfort viewing, this is exhibit A.

Overlord

What if you were trapped in the game as the final boss? Overlord flips the perspective: Ainz is an office worker wearing the body of an undead god, improvising villainy while his fanatically loyal (and alarmingly enthusiastic) minions treat his every cough as ten-dimensional strategy. It's half power fantasy, half workplace comedy about middle management — and the slow-burn conquest of the New World gives it a scale most isekai never attempt.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

Every other pick on this list makes the other world look fun. Re:ZERO asks what it would actually cost. Subaru arrives with no cheat skill except one he'd never choose: when he dies, time rewinds — and he remembers everything. What follows is the genre's most psychologically brutal story, but also one of its most rewarding: every loop is Subaru clawing toward a version of events where the people he loves survive. The lows are crushing, the paybacks are euphoric, and Rem's episode 18 speech remains isekai's single best scene.

The Eminence in Shadow

Cid doesn't want to be the hero or the demon lord — he wants to be the mysterious mastermind lurking in the story's background, and he invents a fake secret organization to play pretend. The joke: the evil cult he made up turns out to be real, and his improvised chuuni nonsense keeps being accidentally, catastrophically correct. Eminence commits to the bit with a completely straight face, and the result is both a genuinely cool action show and the most self-aware comedy in the genre since KONOSUBA. I AM ATOMIC remains a top-tier anime moment.
